J. Mekas, the "godfather" of avant-garde cinema, will visit VMU

Wednesday, September 18, 3 p.m. The "godfather" of avant-garde cinema, poet and filmmaker Jonas Mekas, will visit VDU art gallery "101" (Laisvės al. 53). The famous US artist of Lithuanian origin last visited the university 15 years ago.

During the meeting with the VDU community, Jonas Mekas will present fragments of his latest work and answer the questions of the audience.

The poet and filmmaker J. Mekas last visited VDU in 1997. October 30 - then he was presented with the regalia of an honorary doctor of VMU. On this occasion, the artist gave an impressive inauguration speech and organized readings of the poetry collection "Semeniškiu Idylles".

Jonas Mekas is a laureate of the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize, awarded with the Grand Cross of the Order "For Merit to Lithuania", numerous international film, literature and culture awards. The filmmaker was one of the first in the world to develop the documentary film diary genre. J. Meko's work and activities greatly influenced the history of world culture and cinema, as well as contemporary development.

At the end of last year, Mr. Mekas celebrated his jubilee 90th birthday by holding international exhibitions in London and Paris. Immediately after his stay in Kaunas, the filmmaker and poet will go to St. Petersburg to open a grandiose exhibition dedicated to the Fluxus movement.
