VDU will present regalia to honorary doctors
Monday, March 10, 2 p.m. A solemn ceremony will be held in the Great Hall of VMU (Gimnazijos St. 7), during which VMU Honorary Doctor regalia will be presented to EU Ambassador to the Russian Federation Vygaudus Ušackas and Professor Kazi Almen. The ceremony is dedicated to celebrating the day of the restoration of Lithuanian Independence and is part of the series of events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the restoration of VMU.
"Teachers, scientists and, most importantly, young students need not only abstract ideals, but also an inspiring example of concrete personalities. We highly appreciate prof. K. Almen's contribution to the restoration of our Alma Mater, we admire his achievements both in nuclear energy and in public and literary activities. We are happy to welcome Vygaudas Ušackas to our community - a diplomat whose merits in the fields of international cooperation, peacekeeping and strengthening democracy inspire us to pursue noble goals", noted VMU rector prof. Zigma Pike.
Lawyer, diplomat, political and public figure V. Ušackas has been representing Lithuania, the European Union, and NATO for many years. He has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the United States, Mexico and the United Kingdom. 2010-2013 V. Ušackas was the European Union's special representative and head of the Community mission in Afghanistan. Since 2013 he heads the representation of the European Union in the Russian Federation.
VMU Restorative Senate member prof. Kazys Almenas is a prominent specialist in nuclear engineering, writer, physicist, book publisher, member of the expatriate public political federation "Santara-Šviesa", active organizer of expatriate events. He was a professor at the University of Maryland, and is the author of scientific publications published in the USA. In Lithuania, he headed the scientific safety analysis group of the Ignalina NPP, was one of the founders of the House of Lords support fund, in 1992 founded the publishing house "Litterae universitatis". Organizer and one of the authors of the series of adventure novels "Skomantas".
